Summer heat – makes us sluggish employees

I don’t know how you feel, but summer heat makes my working days real pains. I often find myself sitting in front of the computer thinking at the perfect vacation – I probably shouldn’t say that – but it’s a fact and I can’t deny this feeling. While outside temperature may be rising, inside productivity is on the decline. Not even the air conditioning can change this “summer syndrome”.

It’s not just me, it’s about all of us and there are surveys to prove it. For example, experts from CarrierBuilder.com have conducted a survey which revealed that:

  • - “More than a quarter (27%) of workers describe the temperature at their work place as “too hot,” while 2-in-10 (19 %) workers say it is “too cold.”
  • – More than 1-in-5 (22 %) workers said that a “too hot” work environment made it difficult to concentrate. 11% of workers said the same about a “too cold” work place.

Earth Day and Cyclope-Series in 2010

One month ago we were starting the Earth Day campaign. During this time we have presented several studies results related to printing activities in companies. These studies aimed to:

  1. inform people about the irresponsible printing acts that occur in almost every company, school or library (up to 30% of print volume is pure waste)
  2. inform people about the dramatic impact excessive printing has over the environment: Here I remind you just 3 of them (of course, there are many other ? here you can read more about them)
  3. a. It takes one 15-year old tree to produce HALF a box of office paper
    b. Nearly 80% of the world?s original old growth forests have been logged or severely degraded
    c. A single mature tree can release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings.

  4. educate people to stop wasting paper and other resources
  5. provide solutions for organizations to manage printing activities.

Printing facts and print managers’ effects

Studies estimate that the average commercial employee prints around 10,000 pages per year. Of that print volume, 17% or more is pure waste. That is 1,700 sheets of paper per year that are needlessly printed, resulting in dramatic financial and environmental impact.

Speaking of environmental impact; did you know that:
- It takes 3 tons of wood to produce 1 ton of copy paper
- It takes one 15-year old tree to produce HALF a box of office paper?
- Nearly 80% of the world’s original old growth forests have been logged or severely degraded
- 4281 acres of rainforest are lost every hour worldwide
- 40% of the world’s industrial logging goes into making paper (expected to reach 50% in the near future)
- Worldwide, the pulp and paper industry is the 5th largest industrial consumer of energy.
- Production of 1 ton of copy paper uses 11,134 kWh (same amount of energy used by an average household in 10 months)
- A single mature tree can release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings. Continue reading ‘Printing facts and print managers’ effects’

Save school budget by controlling printer’s usage

Many educational institutions have problems in managing their budget. There are so many fields and activities that require significant parts of the budget that schools often face difficult situations when it comes for allocating resources. In this case, reducing cost has become a common issue for schools as well.

First thing to do when improving school budget is desired is to monitor every field and activity and try to reduce corresponding spending. And costs associated with printing activities are a considerable field that can be controlled and where significant funds can be saved.

Let?s face it, if students can print unlimited number of pages (with their favorite music star or their favorite soccer team) they will do it. And when other school activities have to suffer because of budget limitations, this is getting unfair. Continue reading ‘Save school budget by controlling printer’s usage’
