How to Know It’s Time to Let An Employee Go

fire-employeeOne of the toughest parts of being a boss is the process of hiring and firing employees. Learning how to do this well is an important part of running a business but it’s a difficult thing to learn. It is particularly difficult to figure out when to let an employee go because there are so many factors that must be taken into consideration and because, no matter how necessary it may be to do it, the boss always feels a bit of trepidation (and maybe guilt) about the act of firing someone. By learning how to identify that it’s the right time to let an employee go, you can proceed with this delicate task confidently and make your life (and the lives of those who work with you) a whole lot easier.

The first thing that you need to learn is how to recognize the warning signs that it might be time to fire someone in your company. A major warning sign is when you consistently notice that the employee is underperforming. This may be seen in a lack of sales, frequent sick days or a general inability to get things done on a time. Other warning signs may be those signs that come from outside the employee; constant complaints from other employees or your own feelings of annoyance with this person are examples of those warning signs. When you start to see that there is a problem, it’s time to start thinking about whether or not to let the employee go.

Of course, you won’t get rid of the employee immediately. The next stage of identifying whether or not it’s time to let the employee go is to figure out what the problem is that makes this employee someone who might need to be fired. Sit down and make a list of all of the issues that you are facing with this employee. Determine what this does for your company. Are you losing profits? Is morale low in the office because of it? Clearly pinpoint what reasons you have for wanting to get rid of this person.

Next, you need to look at what losses your business will face as a result of firing the person. This helps you to clearly see whether to let the employee go or to try to resolve the problem. Take into consideration the fact that you’ll have to hire someone new and train that person to replace this employee. Consider any other ramifications that firing this person might have.

Once you’ve weighed out the pros and cons, you should be able to clearly see if the person needs to be fired. If it’s not clear at this point then that means that the problem is one worth working on. This is the time when you confront the employee with the issue at hand and seek to change the problem so that you won’t have to fire him or her. Then you can re-visit the issue in a few months and see where things stand. If no change has occurred at that time, it might now make sense to let the person go.

The process of hiring and firing is indeed very difficult for a manager, but this are decisions that have to be taken, and managers have to be prepared enough, so they can take the best decisions.
