Noise is not just a problem in factories, vehicles or open plan office environments but even in companies that have a well defined organizational culture. Of course for the last category I’m not referring at the sound of machines or different technology systems but of your college’s activities and habits. Sometimes, if you are under time pressure and have an urgent project to finish even the crunch of an apple can signify the “death of your productivity”. No, I’m not joking and it’s a fact tested on my on skin. I have moments when the sound of keyboard is getting me nuts. These little things are productivity killers and are in the same category with distractions factors.
There are many other sources of noises within an office. A common example is the phones ringing and ringing again. And more than that if there are not enough the company’s phones there are still the mobiles of your co-workers.
There is another category of noise generators I like to refer: people yelling to each other from one to another side of the office instead of moving closer so they can talk. I guess moving closer to their interlocutor it’s an exercise to difficult for them.
Commercial radio, are also on top as noise maker. The difference is that if it’s not too loudly you might get used to it. The problem appears if you like a totally different music type but you are forced to listen same horrible songs day by day, hour by hour.
For some people these distractions make focusing on tasks very difficult
especially if there is required logical thinking. So what can you do?
If it’s not too much, you could ask your boss to change your office to a more quietly place. If this is out of discussion, than there are still other solutions.
One should be to ask your co-workers to be more silent while doing different activities and recommend them to use headphones while listening to the radio. An alternative should be for you to use headphones or to buy ear plugs.
So, what about you? Is your productivity affected by noise within your office? And if it is, have you find out some methods to get away with it?
