Most Important Days of the Month for Productivity

writing-on-calendarThere are approximately twenty work days in every month which you could theoretically use to be productive. However, we both know that it doesn’t quite work this way. Some days are naturally filled with high levels of productivity whereas other days seem to be a waste of time no matter what you do to make sure that you are working. The key to a productive month is to make sure that you maximize your use of the month’s most productive days and then use the rest of the month to take care of the mundane tasks that move your work along even though they don’t feel very productive. By understanding the most important days of each month, you can significantly increase your overall productivity.

The first important day of the month is the month’s first working day. You should take the full day to plot out your goals and schedule for the rest of the month. Make two separate task lists for the month – one for the month’s big goals and projects and one for the smaller tasks that must be completed. Take the time to calendar out the month’s meetings, phone calls, travel and deadlines. This will allow you to get a good picture of what the month is going to look like.

Before doing any more planning, you’ll need to assess what type of working situation causes your productivity to be highest. Some people work best when they can scatter out tasks over a period of time whereas others work best when they can fill full days with high-productivity tasks. Determining which category you fall into will allow you to identify the rest of the productive days in the month. You can use this information to make plans for when is best to complete the tasks on each of the two lists you have created.

Looking at your calendar, identify which days are busiest and which are relatively calm. If you are someone who likes to get everything productive done on one day then you should take the projects that are listed on your big tasks list and plot them into your calendar on the days that are busiest. This will leave some days free with nothing to do – these will be your down days during the month when you can fritter away some time on small tasks around the office. Plot it out the opposite way if you are someone who prefers to spread big tasks out throughout the month.

The final most important day of the month for productivity is the month’s last working day. This is when you should review everything that you did throughout the month, take stock of what worked and what didn’t and brainstorm methods of increasing productivity in the month to come. On the first and last days of the month, don’t engage in any other work activities except for this type of planning and review. By doing so, you’ll maximize your most productive days and diminish the negative impact of those days that are less productive.
