Re-Focus Efforts to Improve Employee Productivity

Climbing a Pile of FilesEmployers with companies of all sizes are trying to find ways to increase the productivity of their employees. Recent studies indicate that there are some interesting ways to approach this problem that most businesses haven?t even been considering. Although employers are doing many different things to increase productivity in the office, most of them aren’t paying attention to employee health issues and concerns about mobility in the business. Combined with more traditional methods of improving employee performance, attention to these?two key areas could significantly improve the productivity of the entire nation?s work force.

The first important issue is to focus on the productive health of employees. Employees who are healthy are going to be able to work at their full capacity at the job whereas employees who are ill are going to have reduced productivity even though they may make it to the office for full-time hours. Unfortunately, studies indicate that many businesses are not focusing on the right types of health issues when creating health benefits for their employees. Most businesses focus solely on medical and drug costs which may result in mis-identifying the conditions that lead to decreased productivity in the workplace. A smart health plan for employees will be preventative and proactive to encourage the optimal health of all employees rather than only the improved health of sick employees. Businesses that invest in employee wellness programs including subsidizing gym memberships and encouraging healthy eating in employee lunchrooms are businesses that will benefit from increased overall productivity in the office.

Of course, the physical health of employees isn’t all that is required to have a productive office. It is also important that?employees feel happy at work. One way to do this is to allow for mobility within the company. Studies have recently shown that workforce mobility is a key contributing factor to productivity in the office. This can refer to two things. First it can refer to the ability of employees to move from one position to another within the company. Second it can refer to allowing employees to relocate geographically while remaining with the company. Telecommuting may play a role in this as well. Those businesses that allow for these types of mobility will have employees who are more loyal and more productive than those businesses which do not allow for this.

As we can see, businesses that are looking to increase their productivity may be making errors in the way that they approach this issue. By learning to re-focus on the right areas of concern and to allow for a working environment that really benefits the employees who are with the company, businesses of all sizes put themselves in a better position for increasing the overall productivity of the company.
