How to Deter Employees From Personal Internet Use At Work

internet-monitoringIt is common for employees today to spend a large portion of their day doing non-work related stuff on the web. They check their personal email and social networking accounts, set up instant messenger accounts for chatting with friends and associates and browse around the web reading the latest headlines or their favorite blogs. Although it’s expected that some time is going to be lost to these activities throughout the day, smart employers will work to minimize the amount of time that employees are wasting on personal Internet use. This should be done through setting up a system that deters such activity and yet doesn’t create resentment among employees.

Causing such resentment is the biggest danger that employers will run in to when trying to deter employees from using the Internet for personal use during working hours. No employee wants to be treated like a child who is told what to do and when to do it. The reality of the working environment is that the boss is doing exactly that; telling the employee what he or she is allowed to do. However, this can be done in such a way that the employee doesn’t feel Continue reading ‘How to Deter Employees From Personal Internet Use At Work’

Noise - a productivity killer

silenceNoise is not just a problem in factories, vehicles or open plan office environments but even in companies that have a well defined organizational culture. Of course for the last category I’m not referring at the sound of machines or different technology systems but of your college’s activities and habits. Sometimes, if you are under time pressure and have an urgent project to finish even the crunch of an apple can signify the “death of your productivity”. No, I’m not joking and it’s a fact tested on my on skin. I have moments when the sound of keyboard is getting me nuts. These little things are productivity killers and are in the same category with distractions factors.

You can increase your productivity in just a single work week if you make a commitment to tackling the issue head on. Just follow this 5 Day Plan:

Day One

Make a list of productivity goals. The most important part of getting more productive is to make sure that you understand what productivity means to you. Is the Recession Reducing or Increasing Employee Productivity?

employee-officesStep into any office or place of business and spend some time eavesdropping on the conversations there. You will discover that the only thing that anyone wants to talk about is the recession. People are in constant discussion about what the recession means for them, for the places where they work and for the financial lives of everyone that they know. Is this ongoing conversation taking away from employee productivity? Perhaps to some extent we’re seeing a decrease in productivity because people are talking about the recession but for the most part the recession seems to be motivating employees to work more productively at their jobs.

A common phrase that you will hear around the nation today is, “well at least I have a job”. A few years ago when people would talk about their work, they would often complain about how they didn’t love what they were doing or they were working too much or they didn’t get paid enough. Productive Alternatives to the To Do List

to-do-listAre you the type of person who starts off every day by making a To Do list? There is certainly something satisfying about writing out that list and then checking off each item as it gets done. It makes you feel as though you’re accomplishing things. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that you’re probably wasting a lot of time creating and checking off that To Do list. It’s smarter to find productive ways to replace the To Do list so that you still get everything done without wasting all of that time writing out your lists.

Here are some productive alternatives to the To Do list that you can start using today:

• Online calendars especially shared online calendars. One of the best ways to replace the To Do list with a positive alternative is to get in the habit of using an online calendar such as Google Calendars. This allows you to enter repetitive tasks only once rather than re-writing them every day. It’s especially productive when you are working on a team with others because you can share your calendars with them to make sure that everyone is on the same page as to due dates and meeting times. How Taking Time for Yourself Increases Productivity

taking-time-for-yourselfPeople who have a drive to be productive often end up sabotaging themselves in their efforts to achieve this very goal. That is because most people believe that being productive means working as much as possible all of the time. Although part of productivity is being prolific in whatever you do, part of it is also being at the top of your game. You can’t be totally on the ball if you’re exhausted or overworked. That’s why those people who are the most productive in their lives and in their work are the people who have learned the difficult task of balancing a busy working life with the ability to take time for themselves on a regular basis.

Taking time for yourself increases your productivity in three major ways. First of all, it gives you the physical rest that you need to be able to maintain productivity over time. Secondly, it allows you to return to work with fresh eyes which you gives you a more creative approach to your work and tends to result in higher productivity over all. When employee monitoring is illegal?

If some years ago a third of US employers were using employee monitoring software, you can imagine that these days, considering the financial crisis, an increasing number of employers are using employee monitoring software to reduce malpractice within their companies but also to increase productivity.

But implementing this type of technology needs more than just an IT expert, because there are other things to consider like legal issues. The first think that you should do is to consult with a layer and ask for advice regarding the law within your country. These days there are only few countries that does not allow employee monitoring. As a general view, what each employer must do is to:

  • 1. Write an agreement and ask the employees to sign it
  • 2. Communicate your intention clearly to all your employees
  • 3. Specify the inappropriate uses
  • 4. Set out privacy rules
  • 5. Do not monitor the content but the application usage
